2021: “Familiar Faces”

Our TEDxSCS 2020-2021 team is beyond excited to present this year’s event, “Familiar Faces,” as Catalina’s first-ever virtual TEDx event. Mark your calendars for April 28th, when we will share with you the inspiring and valuable ideas that our diverse range of speakers has to offer! This year’s virtual event will provide the opportunity to learn more from the wonderful members of our community. Every one of you has amazing ideas, passions, and insights, and we hope that this year’s event sparks even more of that. We are sure that you will find their stories as unique and inspiring as we do!

2020: “Picture This”

PICTURE THIS: communicating with someone across the world via electromagnetic waves; humans flying in a machine shaped like a bird as a form of transportation; images of peopltedx logoe moving around, projected onto a screen; women having the right to vote; a person walking on the moon… These are all examples of dreams that were once thought to be impossible, but with determination and imagination, they have become reality.

All great ideas and innovations start with a single thought–a dream–and perhaps just a simple one. It is ideas coupled with action that shape the present and make a change.

Our TEDx 2020 theme of  “Picture This” aims to share the ideas within our community that can change the world for the better.

We live in a world where so much is possible. You can be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 14, raise more than $300 million dollars for AIDs,  grant over 15,600 wishes through a nonprofit organization, or raise over 2.1 billion dollars in juvenile diabetes research. The possibilities are endless.

PICTURE THIS: a world that has discovered a cure for cancer; a world with communities that support each other no matter a person’s race, gender, or religion; a world that doesn’t have to worry about starvation or lack of shelter. Picture something, anything, that you’ve wanted for yourself or your community, now make it your reality. What’s stopping you?

A Great Event!

An epoch storm, torrential rains and massive power outages on the entire Monterey Peninsula did not deter us! While we had to cancel our event originally scheduled for February 13 — and just 45 minutes before we began — we all pulled together and celebrated a fantastic event later this past spring.

Our event, Version 2.0 as it came to be known, was held on Tuesday, April 30. It was a SMASH SUCCESS. Thank you to our four fabulous speakers who returned to Santa Catalina School to give their inspiring and thought-provoking talks. Bravo to our team and to our Santa Catalina School community for pulling together so beautifully and for delivering a great TEDxSantaCatalinaSchool event.

We are sorry to announce that, due to abnormal weather conditions and an extensive power outage, our 2018-2019 TEDxSantaCatalinaSchool event, “Chasing the Light,” has been postponed. The team is working to set a new date for the event, which we will announce as soon as possible. A special thank you goes out to all the speakers, film, light and sound crews, our supportive school administration, and our team members for their hard work, gracious understanding and support.

2019: “Chasing the Light”

Chasing the Light

Don’t miss the livestream of our event on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, from 1:00-3:15p.m. We have five thought-provoking speakers who are eager to share their stories and new ideas with the world.

Why this theme? We are intrigued by light, literally and figuratively!

IMG_4988According to physics, light is electromagnetic radiation to which the eyes react. As a noun, light is defined as a source of illumination, radiance from a particular source; it also means daybreak. As a verb, light ignites, switches on, brightens, and illuminates. There are expressions we use everyday that pertain to light, such as “going towards the light,” “coming to light,” “shedding light,” “bringing to light,” etc. While there are physical and technical definitions of light, light is also an abstract idea that has fascinated and inspired humanity for eons. Light is a symbol for hope, goodness, curiosity, and the inexplicable. We chase after light, this intangible thing we strive to define, whether that be allegorical or literal.

In our 2019 event, we aim to explore the deeper questions pertaining to light:

  • What light are scientists shedding within their fields? What are the latest new ideas and discoveries?
  • How can we open our eyes to the metaphoric light within others and ourselves?
  • Can we shine light on issues long held in the dark and gain new perspective?
  • What can we do to bring light into the darker aspects of life?
  • Is there a spiritual light within and/or around us and, if so, how can we perceive it?

Thank you to all who attend our event, watch our talks (present and past), and help support our work to spread new ideas worth sharing.
